Your first year at NSCAD begins with two semesters of Foundation Studies. This experience builds a broad base of knowledge in the visual arts. A prerequisite for further study, Foundation introduces critical thinking, the development of a visual vocabulary, and key concepts and practices in art, craft and design. After exploring a wide range of ideas, approaches, processes and materials, you will be well-equipped to start making choices about where to focus your creative abilities and academic energies in the following years at NSCAD.

The Minor in Art History is one of our most popular minors as it provides a well rounded art education for a wide variety of applications. Courses draw from a wide variety of courses at the undergraduate level – including courses in history, theory and contemporary issues, methodologies in teaching art, and studio practice.

NSCAD offers you an opportunity to study the rich history of Canada with our minor in Indigenous Studies. We cover an in-depth range of topics from historical to contemporary perspectives, as well as learning how regions gained their distinctive histories through a traditional narrative.

Summary
The Masters of Arts in Art Education is a new graduate program at NSCAD. Its first cohort will be accepted for September 2019. NSCAD will be the only place east of Quebec where museum and curatorial studies are explored at the graduate level. The program will offer rigorous research training and hands-on experience to prepare you for careers in a variety of art education settings. Choose from three different streams: Developmental Modalities, Museum and Curatorial, and Community-Based Practice.
