Summary
Your first year at NSCAD begins with two semesters of Foundation Studies. This experience builds a broad base of knowledge in the visual arts. A prerequisite for further study, Foundation introduces critical thinking, the development of a visual vocabulary, and key concepts and practices in art, craft and design. After exploring a wide range of ideas, approaches, processes and materials, you will be well-equipped to start making choices about where to focus your creative abilities and academic energies in the following years at NSCAD.
Summary
The Bachelor of Design, Major in Interdisciplinary Design is a unique program that takes a distinctly collaborative and process-oriented approach. Because the field of design covers a range of services and products that fuse human factors, technology, and aesthetics, the program will equip you with a variety of skills, including analytical and imaginative thinking, visualization techniques, drawing, typography, and photography, as well as an understanding of production processes. You will also learn to communicate and solve problems across a broad range of media and contexts, including communication, interaction, and product design.
Summary
Created for students that already hold a visual arts degree (BFA or BDes) who wish to study a new discipline, the Visual Arts Certificate in Studio is similar to adding a minor to your existing education. You will further your exploration of visual art processes through concentrated study in one studio discipline in which no more than 12 credits were earned during prior degree work.
Summary
The Post-Baccalaureate Certificate in Design provides an introduction to interdisciplinary design. Comprised of 30 credits, the program is typically taken in the fall and winter semesters and includes a mix of Studio credits, Liberal Arts and Science courses. In keeping with the broad, interdisciplinary approach of NSCAD’s BDes and MDes programs, the Certificate is intended as a generalist credential and is not specific to any one area of design.
Summary
NSCAD’s Master of Design is a 60-credit, two year research and practice oriented degree in Interdisciplinary Design. Over the course of 4 semesters starting the fall, students engage in a series of courses dedicated to studio practice, theory inquiry, and special topics in design history while also pursuing their own supervised design research leading to a completed degree project.
The program emphasizes research through designing as a strategy, asking students to develop resilience in the face of rapidly changing, indeterminate, ecological, social, and economic issues.
Student Work
Graduating Interdisciplinary Design students put on an end-of-year exhibition to launch their work and publish a corresponding catalogue.
Facilities
The Design Division offers general studio space to first and second-year students. Third and fourth year BDes and MDes students have access to secure 24-hour studios with individual workstations and WIFI Internet. The Multimedia Center and the Design Printshop are service centers for all design students. Fabrication facilities, including metal shop, wood shop, and rapid prototyping (3D printer) are available at the Port Campus.
