Why have so many of us kept a sketchbook or journal at some point in our lives — no matter how brief — and what did they stimulate in us? The value of using illustration and text in order to make sense of ourselves and our surroundings has been recognized by humanity for much of our art history. In this course, students will keep sketchbooks wherein they use illustration, doodling, text, paint, collage, and/or other mediums, to document and digest the happenings of their current lives. As the pages fill with work, one goal of this course is for students to note and investigate a theme within their sketchbooks, and create a final piece further investigating said theme. But another equally important goal is for students to note their exceptional creative output during our time together, and continue to explore the work within their sketchbooks long after the course has ended.
