Description
This oil portrait-painting course focuses on paint handling as well as careful colour mixing for rendering particular lights, shadows and textures to create form and evoke personality. Steps for layering the portrait first from wide broad shapes of tone, to medium sized colours laid next to each other, and finishing with fine, subtle details will be introduced and practiced. Students will work with photographic sources, warm-up exercises, brief sketches, and mirrors. An introduction to oil painting with experience and practice in colour theory (colour mixing) and basic drawing skills are strongly suggested as prerequisites for this course. Please bring: painting supplies (see list), a 12 x 16 canvas or canvas board, a clear and well-lit 8” x 10” printed colour portrait photograph of yourself or loved one (please bring a hard copy rather than rely on your phone or IPad).
