Through exploration of the history and nature of the comics medium, this course will consider a wide spectrum of comic artforms including strips, one-pagers, instructional comics, graphic novels, and web comics. Students will establish skills essential to successful comic creation and publication, such as graphic storytelling, character creation, drawing fundamentals, composition and layout, lettering, and publishing strategies. The first part of the course will focus on exercises designed to foster a comics mindset. Throughout the second half of the course, students are expected to develop and complete a short 4-6 page graphic novel or another equivalent comic project.
